The Pine Hills Recreaction Area is one of Indiana’s unknown, but awesome earthly places. My family has been hiking in these hills for three generations. As a point of interest, our grandfather played a pivotal role toward the preservation of not only the Pine Hills Recreation Area, but also Shades and Turkey Run State Parks. The reason this area is so unique has everything to do with the footprint of the Ice Age on Indiana terrain. As the glaciers inched south they flattened northern Indiana and stopped midway leaving some fascinating diversity in our Hoosier landscapes. To me, the footprint represented by the land formations of Pine Hills Recreation Area and the Pot Holes reflect awesome examples of how the weather can impact the earth.
