The Deer

The buck on the Peace Hike Photos page and above endured being the subject of my lens and view for several breathless minutes. Most of the time I was taking pictures, he didn’t take his eyes off me. Nevertheless, he kept drinking water from small dips in the mud always aware I was there. After several minutes of his constant eye contact and through a couple moments when I thought he was going to run away, he dipped his head back down to the water and closed his eyes to drink. The bucks in the forest are shy. This one finally felt at ease enough with me to close his eyes while he drank and I watched.

In the second picture below, the doe and calf below almost appear misty in the image, perhaps as though there is a veil between my eyes and reality. Indeed, Peace Hikes sometimes have a surreal beauty to them, because we see such rare sights and engage with nature in such a profound way. I think the doe and nursing calf were a great catch, despite the window between us creating a misty effect.
